WIN7 32bit - COM Port & Slicer Failure
« Gepost op: 5 december 2020, 17:11:53 »
So i built up an older PC with Win7 32bit OS. Using a USB to serial cable (FTDI). No matter what I try the slicer app kicks up the same error reporting it is trying to install on COM1 when I have the port set to COM3, or COM2.

I have tried multiple combinations. I've seen a few reports here with the same issue, but the work arounds do not change on my end.

Any ideas?

Thanks

In your previous topic you mentioned that you're using a 4-level modem. Rene (Discriminator) explained this "slicer" needs direct hardware access. There is no support for virtual machines or virtual comports (USB->RS-232 converters) because the slicer doesn't comply with the standard RS-232 protocol.

Exactly. Only a real (hardware) serial port can be used in combination with a 2 or 4 level interface.

Also explained here - 'The interface is connected your scanner's or receiver's discriminator output and to your PC's serial port. That should be a 'real' serial port on your PC's motherboard. An RS232 to USB converter or a PCMCIA/PCI card with one or more serial ports will not work.'

I'll pick up a pci serial card this week.

Thanks to both of you for the information

A PCI card will probably not work either. See my answer above. You need a native motherboard serial port.

Was able to purchase a mini PC with a couple of com ports. Now running PDW on Win7 x86 flawlessly.  :)
